Return of the Lobster Hunting Bozo
January 27 - February 2, 2007
Friday, February 02, 2007 - Hamburger Beach Anchorage, George Town, Exumas By Tom
Another week passes and here's the high lights.....
In a surprising reversal of positions, the government people have said it is now ok to fish again. The new rules are now
supposed to be the same as the old rules which apparently were never enforced properly nor understood fully. If you
aren't confused then you're not paying attention.
Anyway, I went spear fishing twice this week, once with Jon from Freebird and once with George on Sequel. Jon and I
got 8 bugs between us and George and I got 6 bugs and 2 fish combined. Both were good days in my book.
As an aside, I got an email from a curious reader who wanted to know why I only hunt with other people and
not by myself. Well, basically it's a safety thing. Or more correctly, it's a wife comfort thing. Almost to a man,
all of my hunting buddies' wives won't let them hunt by themselves.
I guess they (the wives) think there is safety in having a dive partner in the event of a shark or barracuda attack, but
realistically if a shark eats George, all I'm gonna do is swim for my life and then go home and tell his wife that
her husband was eaten on the reef. It's sad but true.
With the fridge full of meat products, we turned to several small boat projects here on Dream Catcher. I finally
got around to fixing the choke cable on our outboard as well as completely re-wiring the wind generator to fix
some shoddy craftsmanship issues we have been having. Man does that piss me off! 1000 bucks for the damn thing
and after 2 months I have to take the rectifier apart and replace all the inner workings as well as solder new
wires into the box.
For the record, I am working on a bill to send to those butt nuggets at Hotwire Energy in Florida for all of
the time I spent repairing their crappy wiring job. Let's see, 5 hours plus materials.......that
comes to one million dollars. Ass.
Regatta is fast approaching and with it our release from the prison known as Georgetown. Don't get me wrong,
I love being here or else we wouldn't come, but we've been so mired down with all of our daily activities that there has
been little time to sail and see some of the more beautiful islands around here.
I try to tell myself it's ok because we are going to stay all summer down here and we can travel then, but all
of the scheduled activities we are into are starting to suck my will to live. Help me !!!
In equipment failure news, our external 2 watt wi-fi transmitter died after only 15 days in service. To put
that in perspective, it took 26 days to get it here via mail from the states. How bad does that suck?
Fortunately, Speedo Ed is heading back to the states for 10 days and he is going to pick me up two new units.
Hopefully the one we had was just a dud. Speaking of wi-fi, when my external antenna, USB wi-fi adapter and linear
booster were all working, I was able to see 15 different networks from our anchorage at the extreme north end of
the Hamburger Beach. Of the 15, 5 are completely open, 8 are private companies and secure, and the last
2 are pay for use sites. Pretty good coverage for the Bahamas.
We watched the remaining football play off games up at St. Francis with most of the other cruisers and this
weekend is the Superbowl. We are planning to go across the harbour via dinghy for the Superbowl and watch it
with the locals at the "Shacks". We like St. Francis, but for what ever reason, none of the Bahamians ever come
over and we figure if we wanted to just hang out with Americans, we could have stayed home.
In my own personal effort to cure world hunger, I took a few lobsters around the harbour and gave them to friends
I know that don't hunt. You'd be amazed at how many friends you can have with a bucket full of bugs (lobsters).
Trust me, nothing says love like fresh caught lobster.
And finally, in Georgetown Poker news, I have finished 3rd and 4th out of 35 the last two nights. 3rd place paid
15 dollars and 4th didn't pay at all and I am now 135 dollars away from paying for my wind surfers.
Ok, that about sums it up. See you next week
