A Brief Pause

Friday, April 01, 2005 - Beaufort Harbour, Beaufort, SC By Tom
We arrived in Beaufort this morning and after dropping the hook promptly went to bed.
Later we awoke and assembled the dinghy for the ride into town. We stopped at Katherine's grill for happy hour
and a few appetizers. We've been here before and both of us like this place.
We didn't make it a late night as we were both tired. We returned to the boat and were asleep by 8 pm
Saturday, April 02, 2005 - Beaufort Marina, Beaufort, SC By Tom
Disaster nearly struck this morning!
We were anchored peacefully when all of the sudden WHAMMO ! A ghetto boat on a piece of shit mooring drifted loose
and hit us in the side. At least that's my version.
An alternate version could be we drug anchor and drifted into the ghetto boat in 30 knots of wind, but I like
my version better.
Anyway, the boat caught our toe rail and didn't do any damage (at least to us), but I had to raise our anchor
to get free of it. The forecast for today is gail conditions and for once it was accurate. We decided to take up
residence at the city marina to wait out the blow.
Trying to land in 30 knots of wind was a treat, but with some help from the dock master we got it done.
In the afternoon Amy toured the art district while I played on my computer. We met up for a cocktail at Kathleen's
and then returned to the boat to make potato skins as a snack and later garlic buttered shrimp for dinner.
The marina has cable tv, so for the first time in almost a year, we turned our television on and watched 4 back
to back episodes of Law & Order.
Tomorrow we head for Charleston
Sunday, April 03, 2005 - Wappoo Creek, Charleston, SC By Amy
Thomas said that I had to start doing the logs because he wants input on the application he's built. At least
it's far enough along now that I probably won't break the program repeatedly. I like to think that my ability
to break the computer makes me a good beta tester. I'm not sure Thomas feels the same. [NOTE: Ironically, I just
had to call Thomas because I broke it at the end of that sentence. It's a talent, really.]
We left Beaufort, SC, early...all the earlier because daylight savings time stole an entire hour from me. Bastards!
It was a winding motor up the ICW in the freezing cold. Much to Thomas's amusement, I wore two pairs of pants,
my heaviest wool sweater, and a hat. We took turns driving and freezing. During his off-time, Thomas listened
to the NASCAR race and made pizza. I did miscellaneous work, read books, and ate pizza.
We stopped just short of Charleston. The anchorage here is ok. Not exactly scenic but more protected than the
anchorage in Charleston proper. We'll probably wait here for weather to go offshore again. Plenty of boat work
to do in the meantime. But Thomas just announced that he feels confident the deck leak that was wetting our bed
has been fixed. Yay!!
And with this highlight of the day, another log is finished.
Monday, April 04, 2005 - City Marina, Charleston, SC By Tom
We got up and motored the 1.2 miles into town and the City Marina. Last night, we decided to take a slip here for at least
a month. We have never been to Charleston before, but have heard good things about it, so we want to take a look
around.
If we like it enough, we may stay here for the upcoming hurricane season, but who knows. We got in to the marina with little
effort and promptly ran into Tye and Suzanne off of Liberty who we haven't seen in two years. They spent the winter here and
are preparing for a run over to the Bahamas. We went over to their boat for happy hour drinks before dinner back on the mother ship.
Since we're not moving every day, I will probably cut back the log updates to just once a week or so. I cannot
imagine that anyone would find it interesting to here about us fixing boat things at the dock day after day.
Stay tuned, more to follow
